Isinumpa ang mga ninuno ni Edmund (Albert Martinez) na ang lahat ng panganay na lalaki sa kanilang angkan ay pagtataksilan ng kanilang mapapangasawa at hahatong sa malagim sa wakes ang kanilang relasyon, kung kaya't may takot sa look niyang magpakasal.  Ngunit ng makilala niya ang bulag pamangkin ng kanyang katiwalang si Manang Tuding (Daria Ramirez) na si Paula (Belinda Bright), nagbago and kanyang pananaw at ito ay kanyang pinakasalan. Maayos ang kanilang pagsasama hanggang sa mapilitan silang manirahan sandali sa Quezon dahil sa isang mahalagang proyekto sa kumpanya ni Edmund.  Lumisan sila sumandali sa bahay ni Paula yaman din lamang na wala namang nakatira ditto at mas magiging komportable si Paula sapagkat kabisado na niya and loob at labas ng kaniyang bahay.  Wala na sanang aalalahanin si Edmund ngunit biglang may bagong kapitbahay na halos kasabay nilang dumating, si Nicanor, isang kompositor.  Nalibang si Paula sa musika ni Nicanor. Nagkakilala sila at naging mabuting magkaibigan.  Nag-uumigting and selos at takot kay Edmund lalo pa't natupad na naman ang sumpa sa isa niyang pinsan. Ang kapitbahay nga kaya ang magiging katupran ng sumpa?

Ang Kapitbahay ay hindi isang pagkaraniwang kwento ng tatsulok ng pag-ibig. Naiiba nag pelikula sapagkat hindi inaasahan ang mga pangyayari sa kuwento. Mahusay ang pagkakahabi ng istorya at hindi ito nalilihis sa sentrong suliranin. Buo ang pagkakalahad sa mga pangunahing tauhan ng buong husay na ginampanan nina Albert Martinez, Joel Torre, at Daria Ramirez. Pasado naman si Belinda Bright liban na lamang sa paminsa'y kakatwa niyang galaw na maari namang palagpasin. Nakatulong nag husto ang magandang paglalapat ng musika at malinis na sinematograpiya.  May ilang sablay nga lamang sa editing ngunit nabawi naman ito sa kabuuan.  Malaking bagay marahil na ang may akda ng kuwento ay siya ring director nito kung kaya't naiparating nang wasto ang mensaheng nais iparating ng pelikula.

Bibihira na ang isang pelikulang puno ng hubaran ay may magandang mensahe sa manonood.  Malinaw na ipinahihiwatig ng Ang Kapitbahay ang namamayaning kultura ng paranoia sa ating lipunan.  Ito ang sanhi ng pagkakawasak ng maraming relasyon. Ang masasamang pangitaing tumatakbo sa isip ng tao ay may malaking epekto sa kahihinatnan ng kanyang relasyon.  Kung kaya't mahalaga ang pagtitiwala bilang sandigan at pundasyon ng pagmamahalan lalo na sa pagsasama ng magasawa.  Walang kapangyarihan ang anumang sumpa sa taong may matibay na pananampalataya. Sa banding huli'y binigyan ng Diyos ang tao ng kakayahang magdesisyon at kumilos ayon sa dikta ng kanyang kunsensiya.  Kailanma'y hindi nagbubunga ng mabuti ang paghihinala, lalo pa't ito ay nakaugat sa paniniwala sa isang kapangyarihang hini nagmumula sa ating Maylikha.

Jae-min is undeterred, and after several weeks go by, Su-min gives in. They are very happy in their relationship until Jae-min's mother discovers them together. She orders Jae-min to marry the woman he's been dating halfheartedly. Su-min is angry. With another man from the host bar, they kidnap Jae-min one night and take him to a shallow grave in the forest. Su-min watches passively as his colleague throws dirt on Jae-min, but eventually moves to stop the plan. His colleague already depressed over a two-timing girlfriend, whacks Su-min with the shovel and leaves the two there in the grave. Jae-min later awakens and takes Su-min to the car and they crash a tree while going back. As dawn breaks in, the two of them start to awake at the same time cops show up at the scene but inside, without paying attention to the cops, Su-min and Jae-min silently reconcile.

Panahon ng dekadang 1920's kung saan ang mga babae, maging sa kilos at salita, ay kontrolado ng asawa at ng mga alituntunin ng lipunan. Hanggang sa pagsapit ng tatarin. Ang katagang tatarinay hango sa salitang tadtarin at sa pelikulang ito, ang tinutukoy ay ang pagtatadtad ng mga babae sa mga gumagapos sa kanilang katauhan at kalooban. Ito'y isang sinaunang ritual, isang puwersang di mapigilan, kung saan ang mga babae ay nagwawala at sinasaniban ng kakaibang lakas upang mabigyang katuparan ang kanilang mga pagnanais at pagnanasa… At sa ganitong katayuan makikita ang makaluma at dominanteng Don Paeng (Edu Manzano) at ang kanyang mayuming sunud-sunurang maybahay na si Doña Lupe (Dina Bonnevie). Ngunit sa pagdating ng tatarin, si Lupe ay pumiglas sa humahabol at sumisigaw sa galít na asawa. Sumama siya sa mga babaeng kumakanta at sumasayaw sa hatak ng tatarin. Nagkita sila ni Guido (Carlos Morales) na pinsan ni Paeng, at sa piling nito muli niyang naramdaman ang matagal ng hinahanap –hanap na mainit na paglalambing. Hindi tumigil si Paeng sa paghanap kay Lupe. Ngunit nang ito'y makita, paano niya haharapin ang mahiwaga at nagbagong Lupe na dumanas ng tatarin?

Ang Tatarin ay isang period film na hango sa kuwentong Summer Solstice ng national artist na si Nick Joaquin, bagamat may ilang karakter at eksena na dinagdag ang pelikula. Kahanga-hanga ang production design na talagang pinag-aralan at binusisi ni Dez Bautista. Angkop na angkop lahat ang kapaligiran sa dekada, sampu ng mga kasuotan, kilos at pananalita, mga lumang bahay, kalye at sasakyan. Malaki ang naitulong ng magandang mga kuha at musika na may kasamang ethnic na tugtog. Matututo at maa-aliw ang mga manonood sa paglarawan ng luho ng mayayaman ng panahon noon, pati na sa pagpakita ng mga pangyayari sa kapistahan ni San Juan Bautista na kasabay ang paganong tatarin. Magagaling lahat ang nagsiganap at bagay na bagay sila sa mga papel na kanilang ginampanan., lalung-lalo na si Dina Bonnevie na nagsimulang napakahinhin at nagtapos na isang pakawala. May istorya naman, ngunit di nabigyang diin ang kuwento ni Paeng at Lupe, sapagkat ang malaking panahon at pansin ay binigay sa mga maraming detalya ng ritual, na sa paulit-ulit na pagpakita nito ay naging napaka-boring.

Bagamat kinailangan sa pelikula ang walang tigil na pagiri-giring pagsasayaw ni Amanda (Rica Peralejo) at ng maraming babae sa ritual ng tatarin, pati na ang maraming eksena ng pagtatalik, ito'y ginawang totoong sensual at pinahabang masyado. Halatang-halata na ginamit lang ito ng prodyuser at director na panghakot ng mas maraming manonood. Totoong nabanggit ni Nick Joaquin ang ritual, ngunit ang mga detalye nito ay likha na ng imahinasyon ni Direktor Aguiluz. Pinakita dito ang hindi kagandahang relasyon ng mag-asawa noong panahon na iyon; naghahari ang lalake at parang mababa ang pagtingin sa babae. Wala siyang boses sa pamilya, sunud-sunuran lang sa asawa, at tinanggalan ng dignidad bilang kapwa tao, na labag sa utos-kristiyano. Ngunit ipinaramdam din na kapag kumilos ang mga babae at nagkaisa, ay "Humanda kayong mga lalake!". Ang lahat ng ito ay nilarawan bilang kuwento na walang pagsang-ayon o pagsalungat. DADENG ( GERMAN MORENO),Gloria’s 65 year-old gay neighbor who sells flowers for the dead in funeral parlor,is burdened by the child ( of a dead love-of-his-life) now a teen gay Byuti ( KIRBY DE JESUS ),an incurable romantic who is head-over-heels in love with Topher ( JOSEPH BITANGCOL) ,a 19-year old “user-friendly” bum,later revealed to be a closet “gay”.


Estrella Kerubin or Star ( KRISTA RANILLO ), 21, is a trying-hard bit-player who has not stopped dreaming,believing and surviving in a dying showbiz. She’d do anything for her ambition,even use her body to please the powers-that-be,including a caterer/caretaker( MON CONFIADO) who claims connections with the production staff. Star has a ‘silent war’ with mother Lucinda ( SNOOKY SERNA),48,whom Star blames for the death of her father/stuntman).One common thing,though in this feuding mother-daughter tandem is their compulsion to work and earn.Lucinda brokers for neighbors who sell their kidneys and other vital parts for a fee.Ironically,she’s a chain-smoker who tries to survive despite her cancer-stricken lungs. While ,Tonio Torres ( ALLEN DIZON ),29,is a male starlet-member of an all-male group called “Wild Boys”.He has seen better days as a bold starlet-now-a pimp to new aspirants. Star calls him a showbiz “kuya”.Despite his misgivings, TONIO’S a resourceful breadwinner who uses his income for expanding his humble abode by building adjoining rooms he rents out for added income. He is also fighting for the custody of his daughter.


Roberto San Pedro ( JAY MANALO ), 32,an ex-convict,gets paroled by a powerful armed group who uses him as an assassin.A man of few words whose eyes reveal personal tragedies and utter bitterness,he’s a reluctant hitman married to a nervous wreck,Angela San Pedro ( ANGELU DE LEON), 29, a good former public school teacher who has lost job after cracking due to extreme pressure.


Almost all of the above stories are resolved.Others are open-ended ‘coz that’s reality. Being treated as a commodity is a hurting truth we have to live by.

Kangkong is the story of a young man who undergoes conflict and confusion in discerning if his call to the priesthood is coming from God or only from his grandmother Nyora Isyang (Odette Khan). An obedient "lola's boy" from birth who is set on entering the seminary, Carlos (Rodel Velayo) displays extraordinary resistance to advances from aggressive and attractive girls. But in the heat of a determined girl's pursuit-aggravated by his ignorance in matters of the flesh-his defenses collapse and he bites into the apple, so to speak. In love with the shameless balikbayan Pamela (Brigette de Joya), he escapes his pushy grandmother just as when she is about to leave him in the seminary. That's where the story really begins.

Many parts of the movie can make the viewer wonder whether it's a drama or a comedy he's watching. Blame it on the lousy script made even lousier by poor delivery and amateurish acting. The inconsistent characterization, overacting to appear funny, and the ill-timed use of slapstick and side remarks also tend to trivialize the otherwise worthy subject. The editing is really bad, and the cinematography even worse-just imagine heads cropped out of the screen, body parts entering the scene when they shouldn't be ("Whose feet are those?"), etc. Outside of the evidently well-thought out and shot seduction scenes, the movie could easily be mistaken for a first attempt at film making by cinema students.

Kangkong comes up as another one of those movies with suggestive one-word titles like Talong, Warat, Sutla, and one more coming soon, Tuhog. The connection between title and subject matter is almost non-existent, and at best, forced to imply a promise of sensual gratification in the movie. However, this seems to be a cinematic trend. For instance, you might ask, Why Kangkong? Who knows, although one thing is sure. The naïve young man and the sex-starved balikbayan often romp about in the kangkungan, and the girl is a kangkong vendor besides. Congratulate yourself if you're reflective enough to see that the kangkungan could very well symbolize the mud of fleshy pleasures that keeps the young man from following a divine calling.

By the way, Kangkong presents a good story; it is like a haunting song sung off-key. Despite its horrid technical flaws, it's well worth one's time and money, because it focuses on an issue that gains relevance in the light of the Church's need for vocations these days. Because of the explicit sex scenes, MTRCB says the movie is For Adults Only; CINEMA wishes, though, that there were less of those torrid scenes so that it may be shown to a wider audience for discussions in families or institutions.
